One of the rules of furniture sanding is to use a sponge sanding block (sponge grinding block), because if you do not use a sanding block for furniture, you cannot ensure an even sanding pressure. For flat surfaces, the sanding block should be equipped with a soft pad; a block without a soft pad does not have elasticity, so during the sanding process, the abrasive particles on the block will scrape the surface of the wood. For curved surfaces, your best option is to use thick flexible foam sanding pads or sponge wrapped with sandpaper. These fillers can change their shape according to the curvature of the wood, thus ensuring a consistent sanding force.
There are three sanding methods: wet and dry sanding, and mechanical sanding.
This method uses sandpaper for sanding. It is suitable for sanding hard and brittle types of paint. The downside is that it produces a lot of dust during operation, which affects environmental hygiene.
This method uses water sandpaper dipped in water or soapy water for sanding. Wet sanding can reduce sanding marks, improve the smoothness of the coating, and save sandpaper and effort. However, after wet sanding, it's important to note that when spraying the lower layer of paint, you must wait until the wet sanding layer is completely dry before applying the next layer of paint; otherwise, the paint layer can easily turn white. Additionally, substrates with high water absorption are not suitable for wet sanding.
For large-scale operations, to improve work efficiency, mechanical sanding methods such as electric sanders (disc type, vibrating type) can be used.
Sponge sanding blocks not only retain the functions of traditional water sandpaper but also overcome all its shortcomings, significantly reducing labor intensity during product sanding, doubling grinding efficiency, lowering cost consumption, and having a long service life. Due to their water storage function, they can reduce the workload of rinsing and debris removal, providing a comfortable hand-held feeling and making them very convenient to use; they can also be used dry to grind various metals and wooden products.
